I have been relieved from the pecuniary pressure, which I would otherwise have suffered, and which I now feel keenly.
It may be said that in having held such numerous acting appointments, and for such long periods, I have been fortunate, not only in having opportunities for showing my ability for the discharge of higher duties, but also in receiving the emoluments attached thereto.
But it should be noted that, compared with the superior appointments for lengthened periods, the remuneration I received was much less than that paid to the substantive holders.
For instance, I take the liberty of mentioning that during the six months I was acting as Registrar of the two Police Magistrates, I was receiving half pay, which was $206 a month, but I was only getting $125 a month.
The total loss to me during that period, together with exchange compensation for the latter sixteen months thereof, amounted to $3,323.52. The gain to the Colony, on the other hand, was still greater.
